I could have gotten you a tree

Something symbolic and not-so-subtle

Either for us to watch grow together

Or

For you to resent by yourself

A long-distance reminder

Me, strewing my leaves across your mind

Until you chop the roots in a rage

Removing my final tendrils from your life

Or

For us to sit under each season

Until the ground is too low to bend

For us to kiss under the shade

And bare branches

I got you an orchid
